SC Housing awards $9.2 million in funding to Disaster Assistance Program applicants

Wednesday, Mar 19, 2025

Columbia, SC – SC Housing has awarded $9.2 million in funding to municipalities and counties across South Carolina to aid in the ongoing recovery from extreme weather events. These funds, provided through the Housing Trust Fund Disaster Assistance Program (HTF DAP), will support home repairs for low-income homeowners whose properties were damaged by severe weather and not covered by insurance.

The $9.2 million will be distributed among six cities and five counties, with funding allocated as follows:

  • City of Aiken – $848,877
  • Anderson County – $688,877
  • City of Bennettsville – $1,798,878
  • Charleston County – $928,877
  • City of Greenville – $228,877
  • Greenville County – $998,878
  • Horry County – $163,327
  • City of North Charleston – $94,327
  • Rock Hill – $518,827
  • City of Spartanburg – $861,377
  • Spartanburg County – $2,068,878

The program, launched in October 2024, is designed to assist homeowners with incomes at or below 80% of their county’s Area Median Income (AMI). Eligible homeowners can receive up to $30,000 in funding for necessary repairs to their primary residence due to damage caused by hurricanes, tropical storms, tornadoes, floods, and other extreme weather events.

“South Carolina’s been no stranger to extreme weather events over the past few years,” said SC Housing’s Housing Trust Fund Manager Jack Suber. “This program provides communities with a great starting point in helping to recover from the lingering effects of these events.”

These local governments will be responsible for administering the funds and assisting eligible homeowners. Applicants were evaluated based on specific criteria, including demonstrated need.

To qualify, damages must be directly caused by extreme weather and not covered by property insurance. Homeowners with insurance will need to provide documentation of denied or partial claims, while uninsured homeowners must certify their lack of coverage. Repairs related to deferred maintenance are not eligible.

The HTF Disaster Assistance Program (DAP) is a statewide initiative aimed at addressing housing recovery needs. Properties do not need to be located in FEMA declared disaster areas. In cases where HTF DAP funds are insufficient, local governments may leverage additional funding sources to ensure repairs are fully completed.
