SC Housing, Johns Island community celebrate Esau Jenkins Village with ribbon cutting

Friday, Dec 12, 2025

JOHNS ISLAND, SC — The Esau Jenkins Village officially opened yesterday with a ribbon cutting ceremony, marking the completion of the 72-unit affordable housing development for seniors.

Construction began in 2024, and the project is already fully leased. Located near Maybank Highway and Bohicket Road, the Village offers 61 one-bedroom and 11 two-bedroom apartments for seniors earning up to 60% of the area’s median income. Residents will also enjoy amenities including a community room, fitness center, computer station, walking trail, and outdoor gathering spaces.

The development honors Esau Jenkins, a South Carolinian and civil rights activist whose decades-long work in social justice and community empowerment inspired safe and affordable housing solutions on Johns Island. The Village represents a collaborative effort between public and private partners to continue his legacy.
