SC Housing urges homeowners to use caution if contacted by third-party companies requesting payment for loss mitigation assistance

Friday, May 16, 2025

Columbia, SC – Homeowners with SC Housing mortgages are advised to beware of third-party companies requesting payment for loss mitigation assistance.

SC Housing will only communicate with its homeowners via mail or through phone calls from their account’s designated counselor.

Any message issued by SC Housing will clearly and boldly feature the agency’s contact information and branding.

Any emails sent by SC Housing will only come from an address with schousing.com” as the email domain suffix. For example, matt.mccoll@schousing.com.

If a homeowner suspects they are the target of a third-party imitating SC Housing, we urge them to contact us at 803-896-9001. Every account has a designated counselor. If you have any questions, contact your counselor.

Just because an email or phone call presents itself as real or legitimate does NOT mean it's real. SC Housing encourages everyone to think before you click a link. It could be an attempt to get sensitive information.

Here are a few tips to follow:

  • Pay attention to the URL. Use trusted and verified links that you know are legitimate. schousing.sc.gov is the only official site for information from SC Housing.
  • Remember, scammers like payments in cryptocurrency, gift cards, reloadable debit cards and wire transfers. The Housing Authority does not charge fees to be on a waiting list and will never ask for these types of payments.
  • If you see an impersonator or fake account on social media, report it to that platform. This will help prevent other people from becoming a victim.
  • If you are a scam victim or provided personal information and think someone is committing identity theft, report it to SC Housing at 803-896-9001 the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs by going to https://consumer.sc.gov/identity-theft-unit or calling 803-734-4200.
